Lots of bands have singers. Most actually. People love when bands sing so they can sing along with. This one particular band had a singer in Casey Sabol. When he left for personal reasons in career, Periphery was left singer-less and in need of talent that matched that of their 3 guitarists, bass player, and amazing drummer. Never the less, Tuesday September 30th, Periphery played for a crowd of maybe 20 people including themselves. As Alex Bois (Guitars) put it, "instead of sitting around on our dicks", Periphery departed from DC and went on tour to show America that they infact maybe be some of the most talented musicians ever assembled.
Typical Metal genre music has become a stereotype in the fashion world. Black everything and graphic tees and other awful K-Rock type style bothers me. Periphery on the other hand, wears red polos and baseball caps and plain t-shirts and wear mens jeans. They have plain New Balance sneakers and hair cuts. Yet somehow they rock out harder than most Metal bands I have ever seen. I often found myself saying "if I ever saw these guys out in puplic I would never think that this is what they did".
I stood, knees to the stage, and caught myself with my mouth wide open several times. I had never seen such clean playing live in a very long time. One of the only bands that had warrented such a reaction before was Between the Buried and Me who I had seen on that very stage months before. With all the hands moving perfectly in sync and the Orbinater playing skins with all his limbs independently while still maintaning a style and stick tricks.
Periphery showed me that there is hope in music. They were unfortunatly opened by several bands that sounded the same. These band will be labeled as "pigsquealflatbrim" and I am glad I went out to eat while they played and came back as they finished. The band on tour with Periphery, This Times It's War, seemed more of the same, but when they played, even though plauged with sickness, also blew my mind with doomy riffs and head banging noise. They deserve a huge props.
All the dudes in Periphery and This Time It's War need to keep on making music. Maybe someone out there will realize what they personally are doing is boring and talentless and learn from these two bands. I honestly have been in a trance for days now, writing this 2 days later. I got a text from my friend Kyle who was with me at the show, "WE SAW PERIPHERY", it said. I almost couldn't believe him and I certianly would have been jealous if it wasn't true.
The most I can do is rave and rant about them being a band that is worth at least a listen and that more bands should learn to play their instruments. All I know is that Periphery will stay on my iPod for the distant forseeable future. Good luck to them in their endevours.
Please check them out here.
